Abstract:
The present work aims to develop a methodology that enables the prediction and harmonic analysis of ocean tides. Three computer codes were developed in Fortran. Two of them make the harmonic analysis to generate the fifteen harmonic constants (seven amplitudes, seven phase delays and the mean sea level) of each location analyzed. The first program uses the Fourier-series method to perform the harmonic analysis. The result is used as a good initial guess to the second program. This, in turn, through the Levenberg-Marquardt method, generates the fifteen parameters investigated. The third program makes the tide prediction with the parameters calculated, comparing the results with those obtained from tide gauges. They were applied to Ilha Fiscal (RJ) and the American cities of Atlantic City and Port Morris. The obtained results allow us to propose the use of this methodology to the scientific and academic communities, aiding in the research on ocean tides.
