This work has as the main objective to develop an efficient methodology for using the geoelectric method for stratified enviroment. It consists of the generation of a computational routines for the direct model and the solution of the inverse problem for a model of n horizontal and infinite layers, as well as the determination, by statistical means, of the optimal number of the layers that best explains the observed data. The computational routines necessary for the main steps of the work were developed in FORTRAN 90 language, with the contribution of the powerful library of PRESS et al. (1997) and PRESS et al. (1996). The methodology was applied to synthetic data and real data. The solutions that were found presented satisfactory correspondence with the synthetic model and with the known geological data acquired through previous works. The results were consistent considering the evaluation of the resistivity values of the layers, their thickness and the number of layers. Keywords: Electrical method; hypothesis test; chi-square test.
